1. Main characteristics of talc

Talc, also known under the names of colubrin, kerolite, agalite, agalmatolite, ollite, steatite or even lardite, is a mineral composed of magnesium silicate containing traces of aluminum, calcium, sodium, iron and nickel.
alc has good resistance to corrosion and outdoor elements.
It can replace titanium dioxide in some industries.

Talc is a white powder that turns slightly green and has a density equal to 2.7 g · cm-33 g / cm³. Talc is also soluble in water.

2. Main fields of application of talc

Talc is used in many areas as:

  • Excipient and lubricant for the pharmaceutical industry by its neutral and inert nature
  • Anti-caking agent for dyes in the food sector
  • Absorbent material, soft to the touch and hydrophobic in cosmetics
  • Production of paper to improve its impermeability
  • Reinforcing filler for the rubber industry where it improves material flow and increases impermeability
  • Functional, opacifying and covering charge in paints
  • Agent improving the mechanical properties of reinforced polymers in plastics
  • Flocculant in water treatment
  • Vehicle weight reduction in the automotive industry
  • UV protector in the agricultural environment
  • Anti-clumping and lubricant for fertilizers and animal feed

3. Industrial handling of talc

Potentially carcinogenic, talcum powder should be handled with care. Depending on the type of talc, the flow characteristics can range from good to poor. The more humid it tends to be, the more delicate it will be to handle.

4. Talc applications with Palamatic Process equipment

In general, talc is handled for storage operations in silos, grinding, micronizing and packaging in sacks and bulk bags.

Palamatic Process's UM® industrial pin mill is an ideal solution for talcum powder. Equipped with two discs, one rotating and the other stationary, the pin mill allows the grinding of talc into a fine powder without the risk of cross-contamination.

Palamatic Process has a variety of bulk bag and sack filling stations and can offer loading solutions of bulk talc into tanks. A turnkey process line has been specially designed for this type of need.

A talcum powder dedusting system can be installed on your line to prevent any dust emissions in your production facility.

5. Palamatic Process customer applications with talc

Palamatic Process can support you in handling talcum powder. Here is an example of a concrete application for one of our clients:

The main objective was to equip their factory with a system to load talc into trucks and bulk bags, from various silos. For this, Palamatic has designed a mobile bulk bag filling line that can be connected to a truck tank via a loading sleeve. Filling of bulk bags of white minerals, talcs and carbonates in silos.
